Typical ranges. Session numbers, timelines and results vary with severity, the treatment chosen and individual response — your plan is confirmed at consultation.
A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser delivers very short pulses of light at a wavelength (1064 nm) that is absorbed by melanin, the skin's pigment, far more than by water or blood. In "toning" mode the energy is kept deliberately low and spread over a wide area, so the pulses shatter clumps of excess pigment into fragments small enough for the body to clear, while the skin surface is left intact.
That low-energy approach is what makes laser toning suitable for darker Indian skin (Fitzpatrick types IV–V), where higher-energy pigment lasers and aggressive resurfacing carry a real risk of causing more pigmentation than they remove. Because the effect on each pass is gentle, laser toning is a series — usually six to eight sessions — and it is combined with prescription lightening creams and daily sunscreen, which do the steady work between sessions.
Laser toning is used for post-inflammatory marks, sun spots, uneven tone and melasma, and it also gives a modest improvement in pore size and skin texture. What it does not do is remove deep dermal pigment in one go, cure melasma, or replace sun protection. Melasma in particular is controlled, not cured: toning lightens it, and the plan afterwards keeps it lightened.
Adults with pigmentation or uneven tone that has not improved with creams alone, including melasma patients who want a safer laser option than resurfacing. Suitable for all Indian skin tones when the fluence is chosen for the skin type, which is how every session here is planned. It is not a first-line treatment for very recent or very superficial marks, which often respond to prescription care and peels alone, and it is not the right tool where pigmentation has an untreated cause — the dermatologist diagnoses the type of pigmentation before recommending it.
Laser toning is a course of 6–8 sessions, 2–3 weeks apart, alongside prescription home care. Improvement is gradual by design; you may notice a brighter, more even tone after two or three sessions, with clearer lightening of spots and patches over the full course. Sun spots and post-acne marks usually respond within 2–3 months; melasma takes longer and needs maintenance afterwards.
Aggressive settings that promise faster results are the main cause of rebound pigmentation on Indian skin. Your dermatologist will set expectations for your type of pigmentation and will not increase the energy faster than your skin tolerates.
Low-fluence Q-switched Nd:YAG is chosen specifically because it is safe on Fitzpatrick IV–V skin; settings are set for your skin type, not a default.
An MD dermatologist identifies the type of pigmentation first, so melasma is not treated like a sun spot.
Laser toning is combined with prescription home care and sun protection, which is what makes the result hold.
