Typical ranges. Session numbers, timelines and results vary with severity, the treatment chosen and individual response — your plan is confirmed at consultation.
Platelets are the small cells in blood that start healing when you cut yourself. They carry growth factors — proteins that signal cells to repair and multiply. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a small sample of your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets to several times their normal level, then injected in tiny amounts across the thinning areas of the scalp.
In the scalp, those growth factors are thought to prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle, improve blood supply around the follicle and support follicles that have begun to miniaturise. PRP does not create new follicles: it works on the ones you still have, which is why it suits early and moderate thinning far better than advanced loss.
Because the preparation comes from your own blood, there is no risk of allergy or rejection. The variables that matter are how the blood is processed — platelet concentration varies with the kit and technique — how many sessions are given, and whether the underlying cause of hair fall is being treated at the same time. PRP on its own, without medical treatment for pattern hair loss, tends to disappoint.
Adults with early or moderate thinning who still have fine, miniaturised hairs in the affected area — PRP strengthens what is there. It is most effective when combined with prescription medical treatment for pattern hair loss and when any deficiency has been corrected first. It is not suitable for areas that are completely bald and smooth, because there are no follicles left to stimulate. Suitability is decided at consultation after trichoscopy; if the dermatologist does not think PRP will help you, you will be told.
A standard PRP course is 3–4 sessions, four weeks apart, followed by a maintenance session every 4–6 months if it is helping. Reduced shedding is usually noticed after the second or third session; improvement in density is judged at 4–6 months, because that is how long a new growth cycle takes to show.
PRP is a support treatment. In pattern hair loss the genetic process continues, so the improvement is maintained only while maintenance sessions and medical treatment continue. Your dermatologist will set out the plan and the review points at the first visit rather than promising a fixed result.
Trichoscopy and blood work come first; PRP is recommended only when the diagnosis supports it, and combined with medical treatment.
The same protocol every session, so the platelet concentration you receive is consistent from one visit to the next.
If GFC or medical treatment alone would serve you better, we offer those too; if a transplant would, we say so and refer you — so the advice is not shaped by what is available.
Standardised scalp photographs at the start and at each review, in the same light, so the decision to continue is based on evidence.
