A hair transplant moves healthy follicles from a donor area — usually the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is genetically resistant to the hormones that cause pattern loss — to areas where follicles have been lost. In the FUE technique used by most surgical centres today, follicular units are extracted one by one and implanted at the angle and density of natural hair. Transplanted hair sheds in the first weeks, regrows from around three months, and reaches its final result at twelve to eighteen months.
It is the right treatment for a specific situation: established pattern hair loss with a stable rate of loss, an area where follicles are genuinely gone rather than miniaturised, and enough donor hair to cover it. It is the wrong treatment during active diffuse shedding, for early thinning that medical treatment would handle, and for hair loss with an untreated medical cause. A good proportion of people who ask about a transplant are better served by medical treatment, PRP or GFC — and some are not ready yet.
That is why the assessment matters more than the surgery. Men and women with established pattern hair loss who are considering surgery and want a dermatologist's assessment first. Good candidates have a stable rate of loss, areas of genuine follicle loss rather than thinning, and adequate donor density. If you are in active shedding, in early thinning, or have hair loss with an untreated cause, you will be told that you are not ready — and offered the treatment that fits.
The assessment itself is one or two visits. If medical treatment is needed first, stabilising pattern hair loss usually takes three to six months before a surgical centre would plan a procedure. The transplant is a single-day procedure at the referred centre, and the visible result takes twelve to eighteen months to mature.
Because the procedure is done elsewhere, the assessment here has no reason to steer you towards it.
