Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in skin, where it holds water and gives tissue its plumpness. Dermal fillers are smooth HA gels, cross-linked so that they hold their shape for months, injected beneath the skin to replace volume that has been lost or to add definition where the underlying bone and fat do not provide it. Different products have different firmness: soft gels for lips and the under-eye, firmer ones for cheeks, chin and jawline.
With age the face loses fat pads, bone support and skin elasticity, and the result is not just lines but a change in shape — hollowing under the eyes, flattening of the cheeks, deeper nasolabial folds, a less defined jaw. Filler addresses the shape. That is why a small amount placed in the right plane of the cheek can soften a fold lower down more naturally than filling the fold itself.
Because HA fillers are gradually broken down by the body, results last months rather than forever — typically 9–18 months depending on the product and the area — and can be dissolved early with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) if needed. That reversibility is the main safety advantage of HA over permanent fillers, which we do not use.
Adults who want a specific, natural-looking correction — a hollow filled, a contour restored, lips balanced — rather than a changed face. Fillers suit both age-related volume loss and features that were always under-projected, such as a small chin. They are not for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, with an active skin infection, or with unrealistic expectations of what an injectable can do; significant sagging needs a different approach. At consultation the doctor assesses your face as a whole and will sometimes suggest less filler than you had in mind, or a different area than you expected.
Filler is a single session per area, with a review two weeks later. The result is visible immediately and settles into its final look over 1–2 weeks as swelling resolves. How long it lasts depends on the product, the area and your metabolism: lips tend to last 6–12 months, cheeks and chin 12–18 months, tear troughs 9–12 months.
We deliberately treat conservatively at the first visit — it is far easier to add a little at the review than to dissolve too much. Over time many patients need less product to maintain the result, because HA also stimulates some collagen where it is placed.
Facial assessment, product choice and every injection are done by a doctor, with anatomy — including where the blood vessels run — front of mind.
We would rather add a little at the two-week review than overfill. The aim is that people notice you look rested, not that you have had filler.
